Forgetting Sarah Marshall

August 27th 2008 01:31
The synopsis:

Peter Bretter (Jason Segal) is broken up with by his famous girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) & is absolutely besotted with grief. In an attempt to move on he takes a trip to Hawaii where he finds Sarah is also holidaying with her new rock star boyfriend Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Thrown for a loop Peter continues to morn his loss until hotel clerk Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis) comes into the picture. Then the usual romantic comedy plot really comes into play when Sarah comes between Peter & Rachel. You can find the rest out for yourself, as I don’t want to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn’t yet seen it.

My take:

Forgetting Sarah Marshall just released on DVD is one of the few romantic comedy’s that doesn’t make me want to puke. Written by Jason Segal, this film is an honest & humorous observation of relationships & the human psyche.

Segal has the ability to write an original & witty script, containing memorable, quirky characters. He is able to take a seemingly clichéd scene & shake the shit out of it, giving the viewer something really different. Notably the break up scene in which there is more than a couple of unexpected full frontal nude shots of Jason Segal. The imagery takes you by surprise but also adds an element of realism & discomfort, bringing you into the emotion of that situation. Perhaps the fact that Jason was actually broken up with whilst naked is the reason this scene is so effective.

His satire of crime scene investigation type shows is brilliant, we see the hot chick (Kristen Bell) & the older near washed up actor (Billie Baldwin) teaming up to throw cheesy & sometimes bizarre lines at us like “Remember how we thought the killer masturbated before committing his crimes? …Looks like where he's going he'll need to know how to masturbate.” CSI Miami: Horatio Caine anyone?

But Segal is not the only talent in this movie. A lot of kudos should also go to director Nicholas Stroller, one of the writers of Fun with Dick & Jane. Stroller took this project as his directing debut, a great first step. The entire cast are all equally fantastic, completely getting underneath the skins of their characters. They make you laugh, they make you squirm & together they make this not only the first but the best “romantic disaster comedy” ever made.

Kate Nash @ Oxford Art Factory '08

June 20th 2008 06:21
This is a new review although the gig was some time ago. I had always meant to write a review so here it is.
I was really excited to grab a ticket to Kate Nash, as it was very last minute I found out she was playing. I had discovered her on Triple J while I was working at a job 100kms away from home, thus I spent a lot of time with my car radio. I fell in love with her song ‘Foundations’. I bought the EP being a tight arse and really enjoyed the other B-side songs, ‘Navy Taxi’ being my favourite of all her songs, which she didn’t play to my disappointment.
Oxford Art Factory (Sydney) is a pretty good venue, it’s cosy which I like and the bar is nice and close. It also has a separate room if you want to get away from the crowd. It’s worth mentioning at this point that the toilets although nicely decorated, where overflowing, dark at very stinky, so ladies if you go there it benefits to wear heals. A photographer also snapped us, which made us feel a bit of celebrity and that certainly doesn’t go astray. But on with the gig… Kate was spectacular! She had great audience contact and was quite modest which I think adds to the cuteness of her character. She played both keys and guitar during the set, which is something I like to see, musicians that can actually play instruments. The thing I most enjoyed was that she really got into the emotional content of her music. She is a beautiful lyricist, who paints raw and honest stories with her sweet husky voice. Some would say the highlight was when Billy Bragg made a cameo to perform a duet of one of his classics ‘A New England’. I like Billy but I would hardly say this was the highlight. I think the whole set was delightful and Bragg was just a little bonus in that. I was really irritated by the majority of the crowd though as they continually chatted through her performance. It wasn’t like she was support, it was her gig and presumably that’s who the people were there to see. It gave the vibe of an open mic night at the local pub, where the music is just the backing to the talking. There was another room that they could have gone to if they weren’t interested in watching her. At times I think she was pissed off about it too, though she politely didn’t say anything. Kate Nash is an awesomely talented artist and performer. Her songs sound as good live as they do recorded and Kate genuinely seems like an intelligent, down to earth woman. Which is refreshing to see in today’s music industry.

Ok, let me be straight up first off the bat. The reason I gave this CD a listen is because Jared Letto has status. Honestly I kinda expected that his music would be shallow & whiny, but I was pleasantly surprised & very wrong. A Beautiful Lie does have a slightly bleeding heart emo/rock feel that waves in & out through it. However it does bring to the plate just a little more. The title track ‘A Beautiful Lie’ is pretty standard pop/rock/emo, as is ‘The Kill’, the first single off the album, which is definitely my favourite. ‘Was it a Dream’ which takes influence from the Cure really got me & I love a good string arrangement which ‘A Modern Myth’ provides. The final track on the album is a cover of Bjorks' ‘Hunter’, I never could have imagined that a dude could ever do justice to a Bjork song but Jared certainly has. Although this CD probably won’t do it for a lot of folks, it’s not just your standard emo/rock deal. It really is different & I highly recommend whacking it in your stereo.

Come Together Festival 2007

May 22nd 2008 07:13
How hard is it to give away a ticket to something as awesome as Come Together? I couldn’t pay my friends to go. So after hiring a shonky hooker to be my companion for the day we were off, over the bridge & not too far away. Getting there perhaps a little prematurely I saw a lot of fairly ok bands, but none that really got me going. The first band to tickle my fancy was Casino Rumblers, cause I do like a bit of psychobilly/ska in the morning. I hadn’t seen these fellas before but they were solid & energetic which is more than I could have asked for so early in the day. Los Capitanes where the next set to strike me. These guys utterly blew me away; I couldn’t believe I’d never heard of them before, considering they played the BMX Games this year, shame on me. Not only do these fellas have great tunes & a tight set, but they also put on one frickin awesome show. Apparently there’s more to Canberra than porn & fireworks. I knew I’d wouldn’t be let down by The Porkers, these guys are ska veterans & every bit the part. Their set saw a second performance for Rob from Casino Rumblers; boy does this guy get around. I was stoked to finally catch our very own adopted Japanese punk trio Mach Pelican in their last Sydney show. I am heartbroken over the news of their calling it quits. Trial Kennedy a relatively new Melbourne band gave a great show & proved they have something that makes them stand out against the billion other bands trying to make it big in the rainy city. Enter Carpathian; if this isn’t the band to get the crowd going nuts I don’t know what is. Even with all the shuffling around this band has done in the last year or so, they still rocked out. Their line up show cased a relatively new Martin on vox & a cameo from Crafter on bass. It was all a bit of a blur until Against Me! who were for me the under dog of the day. Not exactly my cup of tea but still good to watch. Excitement, excitement then cruel disappointment… After Norma Jean’s first song I am struck down by the cruel hand of fate & have no choice but to leave. I must say the one song I did hear was beyond amazing. So for me Los Capitanes & that tiny snippet of Norma Jean were the days true highlights. I am pretty crushed that I missed Every Time I Die, but from all accounts they were a bit of a let down. All in all I had an awesome day & enjoyed the tunes, the vibe & definitely the fact that it was indoors.

Music for the Recently Deceased the new album from Adelaide Metal/Hardcore band I Killed the Prom Queen is the best CD I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing all year. With new front man Edward Butcher these guys have developed a bigger better more complex sound. I do like their previous sound when Krafter was still on the scene, however when I saw them at Hardcore 2006 at the Gaelic Club, I was blown away by their performance & much prefer Ed’s style as a vocalist. He has a better range & his lyrics have an abstract edge about them. I’m also really impressed with the guitar work on this album. I absolutely love the guitar solos, which is funny because I usually tend to cringe through them, but these ones manage to make me do a 180. The whole album is so well arranged I don’t think there’s a single track or part to it I don’t like. If you don’t have this album go out & buy it now! I am left asking one question though… Ed, how do you manage to growl so low in jeans so god damn tight?

Perhaps it was Northern Exposure that ignited my fascination for Alaska back when I was a wee kitten. But upon hearing 36 Crazyfists for the first time I was stoked that finally Alaska is represented by something with a little more depth then just blood sports, bad hats and moose.

On hearing the news of the release of their third album “Rest Inside The Flames” I eagerly awaited to hear what the band had to offer. This album expresses more then just that of your average metal act. With a hint of hardcore, of melodic madness and the most solid breakdowns to ever hit my ears, 36 Crazyfists have carried through their brilliance and originality of sound. Their songs portray a sad poetry and at times a haunting bitterness. I’m counting down the days til their Sydney show at UNSW Roundhouse on September 3rd. If these guys are as good live as they are recorded it’s a gig not to be missed.
